Following last week's tragic events in France, the 19th international Milipol security conference for internal state security opened on a somber note and with much focus. The show took place four days after a series of coordinated terrorist attacks, consisting of mass shootings, suicide bombing and hostage–taking, all of which occurred in Paris, the capital of France. This time, the show was more relevant than ever, and focused on five main topics:

  • Anti-terrorism: Biometrics as a means of managing identification for immigration and border control systems, as well as crisis control, intelligence and special-forces

  • Cybersecurity: General IT systems, data protection, Big Data, banking and fiduciary security for the war against human trafficking

  • Safe Cities: crowd control, law enforcement, urban security and local public safety, industrial and high security site protection, video protection and data analysis.

  • Major Risks: victim assistance, emergency management, logistics back up, command hubs, analysis and risk management, fire brigade interventions, protection of civilians, first responders.

  • New Technologies and New Threats

Drones and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) were everywhere at Milipol. From an Aero Surveillance Multi-purpose payload launcher designed to fire ammunition, to providing law enforcement with surveillance to detecting chemicals. Wearable cameras and surveillance could also be seen a lot. Command and control armed vehicles took big presence, weapons of all kinds, border protection and local public safety solutions. Emergency communications were in many cases a bonding link between the above mentioned topics and actual onsite operations.

Border Security is a challenge for every nation. Europe's open border policy makes regular border security and patrol even more challenging. Several wireless communications companies provided interesting solutions to overcoming border security challenges.

Special Missioned Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and Drones. Transferring and communicating the data obtained from mission aircraft to local headquarters involves several challenges that require special attention. Most mission aircraft fly in or over challenging environments in urban and densely populated areas to deliver intelligence and surveillance. Here too, communications play a vital role in the success operations of such drones and missioned air crafts.

Bombs and Firearms Detection was very much a focus at the show. Wireless communications play a big role here, too with several companies such as Netline and Mobilicom proving interesting solutions for K9 Units.

Interoperability

Following the aftermath of the tragic events in Paris, interoperability and communications among all units approaching a scene was also the discussion of the day. This topic seems to be a common thread across the world. Creating a communications unified platforms where all joint forces from first responders, to law enforcement to Special Forces that enable all to operate as a unified entity is still a major challenge.Interoperability refers to a property of a product or system whose interfaces are completely understood, to work with other products or systems, present or future, without any restricted access or implementation. Furthermore, when it comes to major disaster events and emergencies, interoperability MUST enforce technologically on a multi-sphere level: from land, air and sea, to support all incoming emergency response teams.

Is Wireless Communications a Crucial Link?

It seems that wireless communications plays a vital link in elevating the level of action ability in emergency, disaster relief events and surveillance. It also looks like the world is becoming more aware of the need for communications technology to complete current security infrastructures and vehicles.
