Equities Sector Coverage: Stocks Finish Flat Despite GDP News

Advanced GDP for the third quarter came in a 2.0%. A month from now we get the preliminary report then a month later the final number. University of Michigan consumer sentiment came in at 82.6 in October below expectations. The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded up to 13,132.79 then down to 13,040.17 then up to 13,146.63 going into the final half hour of trading staying well below the 50-day simple moving average at 13,348.63 with the 200-day at 12,975.83. The NASDAQ traded up to 2999.14 then down to 2961.16 then consolidated well below the 50-day simple moving average at 3093.24.

Asian stocks closed lower on Friday. The Nikkei 225 closed at 8,933 – down 1.35%. The Hang Seng closed at 21,546 – down 1.21%. European exchanges opened lower but closed higher. The FTSE 100 ended the day at 5,813 – up 0.14%. The DAX ended the day at 7,230 – up 0.41%. The CAC 40 ended the day at 3,435 – up 0.69%. The yield on the 10-Year US Treasury declined from 1.835% to 1.747% with the 50-day and 200-day simple moving averages at 1.705% and 1.799%.

Comex gold declined to $1701.4 the Troy ounce then rebounded to $1719.9 between the 200-day and 50-day simple moving averages at $1664.8 and 1730.4. Nymex crude oil declined to $85.00 per barrel then rose to $86.37 staying below its 50-day and 200-day simple moving averages at $93.10 and $95.33. The euro versus the dollar declined from 1.2955 to 1.2885 staying between its 200-day simple moving average at 1.2834 and its September 17 high at 1.3170.

Energy

The low was below its 200-day at 2975.65 but the close as of 3:30 PM was not. Global spare oil output capacity excluding Iranian production rose to 2M bpd in Sep-Oct from 1.8M bpd in the previous two months, citing EIA estimates. Arch Coal (ACI) beat estimates by 36 cents and revenue by $80M. Basic Energy Services (BAS) reported Q3 EPS of $0.21 (in-line), while missing revenue by $6M. Cabot Oil & Gas (COG) beat estimates by 8 cents, while missing revenue by $14M. Cloud Peak Energy (CLD) beat estimates by 32 cents and revenue by $30M. Bonanza Creek Energy (BCEI) is a new Buy at SunTrust. Gulfport Energy (GPOR) is resumed with a Outperform at Credit Suisse. Hercules Offshore (HERO) gets a Buy-from-Hold hoist at Dahlman Rose. Marathon Petroleum (MPC) is moved to Outperform from Neutral at Credit Suisse. Occidental Petroleum (OXY) is now Neutral from Outperform at Macquarie. NewMarket (NEU) beat estimates by 49 cents, while missing revenue by $36M. Gold Fields (GFI) beat estimates by a penny with revenue in-line with estimates. Cliffs Natural Resources (CLF) is resumed at a Hold at Dahlman Rose. Agnico-Eagle Mines (AEM) is upgraded to Sector Perform from Underperform at CIBC World Markets. Owens-Illinois (OI) gets lifted to Buy from Neutral at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch. Big Mover – Eastman Chemical (EMN) is up about 13%. Dow Components – Alcoa (AA) is down about 0.9%. Dun & Bradstreet’s (DNB) Q3 beats on EPS and comes in line on revenue as total sales rose a tepid 2%. Expeditors International (EXPD) gets added to Goldman Sachs’ list of Conviction Buys. Amazon’s (AMZN) Q3 swung to an adjusted loss per share of $0.23 from a profit of $0.14 a year ago despite sales jumping 27% to $13.81B. Pearson (PSO) is in talks to merge its Penguin publishing unit with Bertelsmann's Random House. The WSJ reports that the deal would create a company worth $2B-$3B and account for over 25% of global English-language consumer book sales. DeVry (DV) beat estimates by 18 cents with revenue in-line with estimates. Comcast (CMCSA) reported Q3 EPS of $0.46 (in-line), while missing revenue by $1.7B. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (GT) missed estimates by 7 cents and revenue by $600M. Newell Rubbermaid (NWL) beat estimates by 3 cents with revenue in-line with estimates. Columbia Sportswear (COLM) beat estimates by 23 cents and revenue by $4M. Town Sports International (CLUB) reported Q3 EPS of $0.13 (in-line) and revenue of $119.6M (in-line). BJ's Restaurants (BJRI) missed estimates by 4 cents and revenue by $3M. Aaron's (AAN) beat estimates by 3 cents with revenue in-line with estimates. Magellan Health Services (MGLN) beat estimates by $1.39, while missing revenue by $39M. Coventry Health Care (CVH) beat estimates by 5 cents, while missing revenue by $40M. ImmunoGen (IMGN) missed estimates by 5 cents with revenue in-line with estimates. Omega Healthcare Investors (OHI) beat estimates by 2 cents and revenue by $3M. Merit Medical Systems (MMSI) beat estimates by 3 cents, while missing revenue by $3M. Pacific Biosciences of California (PACB) beat estimates by 2 cents, while missing revenue by $0.3M. HealthSouth (HLS) beat estimates by 11 cents and revenue by $15M. The company guides FY12 higher, now expecting $1.49 - $1.53 versus previous $1.45 - $1.50. eHealth (EHTH) beat estimates by 10 cents and revenue by $0.9M. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and his Connecticut counterpart have widened their probe into Libor manipulation, issuing subpoenas to nine additional banks in August and September. The lenders include Bank of America (BAC), Credit Suisse (CS), Lloyds (LYG) and Royal Bank of Canada (RY). Bank of America (BAC) staff could face civil fraud charges as part of a government lawsuit that accuses the bank of misrepresenting the quality of home loans its Countrywide unit sold to Fannie and Freddie, causing losses of over $1B to taxpayers. Apax Partners and Apollo Global Management (APO) are the frontrunners in the race for McGraw-Hill's Education unit, with a deadline for bids closing yesterday. Freddie Mac (FMCC.OB) resisted allowing mortgage-borrowers to refinance to cheaper loans partly due to concerns the move would hurt profits and prevent it from paying back its bailout, a ProPublica investigation finds. Weyerhaeuser (WY) beat estimates by 4 cents on revenue of $1.79B. Hancock (HBHC) missed estimates by 5 cents. Dollar Financial (DLLR) missed estimates by 9 cents and revenue by $5M. Information Technology

Apple's (AAPL) FQ4 EPS undershot Street forecasts despite rising to $8.67 from $7.05 a year ago, with lower-than-expected iPad sales helping to account for the miss. However, it's worth pointing out that net profit hit $8.2B for the quarter and a gargantuan $41.7B for the whole year vs. $25.9B in FY 2011. Samsung's (SSNLF) Q3 net profit soared 91% to 6.56T won ($6B) - the company's third straight quarter of record profit - while revenue jumped 26% to 52.2T won. Samsung (SSNLF) didn't say in its latest earnings report, but research firm Strategy Analytics estimates that the Korean firm shipped 56.9M smartphones in Q3, taking 35.2% market share and keeping hold of the lead. Apple (AAPL) retained second place with 26.9M handsets, or 16.6% share, but Nokia (NOK) slipped out of the top three for the first time. Total global shipments grew 35% on year to 162M units. Microsoft's (MSFT) long-awaited Windows 8 operating system and Surface tablet are officially going on sale today. Microsoft looks to connect computers, smartphones, tablets and its Xbox gaming machine. Ericsson’s (ERIC) Q3 net profit dropped 43% to 2.18B kronor ($325M) (versus 1.95B kroner consensus). Informatica (INFA) guides on its Q3 call for Q4 revenue of $210M-$225M and EPS of $0.35-$0.39 (versus a consensus of $218.4M and $0.39). Applied Micro Circuits (AMCC) reported Q3 EPS of -$0.16 (in-line), while beating revenue by $1M. TeleCommunication Systems (TSYS) beat estimates by 5 cents and revenue by $9M. QLogic (QLGC) reported FQ2 EPS of $0.18 (in-line), while beating revenue by $0.4M. InterNAP Network Services (INAP) missed estimates by 2 cents and revenue by $1.2M. Freescale Semiconductor (FSL) beat estimates by 10 cents and revenue by $23M. Synaptics (SYNA) beat estimates by 3 cents and revenue by $3M. FQ2 guidance is for revenue of $134M-$142M (versus a $136.5M consensus). Amkor Technology (AMKR) missed estimates by 5 cents and revenue by $24M. VeriSign (VRSN) missed estimates by 2 cents with revenue in-line with estimates. KLA-Tencor (KLAC) missed estimates by 5 cents and revenue by $13M. Emulex (ELX) missed estimates by 3 cents and revenue by $9M. Micrel (MCRL) beat estimates by a penny, while missing revenue by $62.9M. Maxim Integrated Products (MXIM) beat estimates by 3 cents and revenue by $3M. Power-One (PWER) missed estimates by 2 cents on revenue of $284M. Informatica (INFA) beat estimates by a penny with revenue in-line with estimates. Liquidity Services (LQDT) is taken to Buy from Neutral at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch. NetSuite (N) is now Outperform from Market Perform at Northland Securities. SAP AG (SAP) is moved to Buy from Neutral at Bank of America-Merrill. Constant Contact (CTCT) is downgraded to Hold from Buy at Needham. Electronic Arts (EA) is cut to Sector Perform from Outperform at Pacific Crest.
