5 dead, 2 critical in Saskatchewan School Shooting

Police have arrested an unnamed suspect in the small town of La Loche in Saskatchewan, Canada. The separate shootings happened near La Loche Community School, a PreK-12 school in the town of about 2,600 residents. Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded to the shooting within the school that has 900 students.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave comments at a press conference from Davos. “We all grieve with and stand with the community of La Loche and the province of Saskatchewan on this terrible and tragic day,” he said. Details are coming out slowly, but it is suspected that the shooter first killed family members at home and then went to the school afterwards. La Loche is an impoverished, aboriginal community.

The acting Mayor Kevin Janvier’s daughter was also one of the victims at the school shooting site. Among Canada’s provinces Saskatchewan has the highest propensity for family violence.
