How do you respond to life when we get hit with an unexpected wave?

Do you panic or stay calm?

The choice you have to make is whether to drown in the sea of technology and change and let fear win, or embrace it and ride the waves.

If you try to keep your head down and ignore it you will “drown.”

If you raise your hand to learn new ways of doing things, you will amaze yourself and thrive. Unlike a hurricane where people come in a helicopter to save you, if you ignore warnings to evacuate, no one is coming to save you in your life so you need to be lifeguard of your own life.

As a former lifeguard, I learned the value of staying calm when disruption happens. You have to read non-verbal clues just like you do in business. Is someone drowning or are they waving to their friends? Is a potential client confused by what you are saying or are they just thinking of a question to ask? When you are aware of how to read a situation, you are well on your way to anticipating what is happening now as well as what is about to happen.

There are 3 steps to being your own lifeguard:

  • Don’t be an ostrich with your head in the sand. If you choose to ignore what is happening around you, then your career can look like Blockbuster. If you embrace and anticipate what is coming, you can innovate and be like Netflix.
  • Don’t just work smart – is not enough anymore. You have to blend your intellect with your instinct. Your soft skills have to match your hard skills to evolve. Trust your gut requires pulling back from just being busy.
  • Don’t Get Stuck In Your Comfort Zone and Get Into The Learning Zone. Watch fear evaporate as learning sets in.

When you become the lifeguard of your life, not only are you free of fear, but you realize that who you are is bigger than what happens to you. When you remember that you are the same person whether you are being laid off or winning an award you are giving the world the best version of yourself.

The secret to being the lifeguard of your own life is not to let outside circumstances define your self-worth. Now more than ever the world needs the best version of you to show up.
