What the Detroit Red Wings' plans are for top goaltending prospect

Detroit Free Press |

--The Red Wings' top goaltending prospect will begin his pro career next season.

The Wings have signed Filip Larsson to a three-year, entry-level contract, and assistant general manager Ryan Martin told the Free Press Larsson will be in Grand Rapids in 2019-20. The Wings are set in goal through next season, with both Jimmy Howard and Jonathan Bernier under contract.

The Wings drafted Larsson at 167th overall in 2016. He spent 2018-19 at the University of Denver, where he capped his freshman year with an appearance in the Frozen Four after two straight shutouts in the West Regional.

Larsson, 20, missed the first two months of the season recovering from a groin injury he suffered in February of 2018 while playing for the Tri-City Storm. (USHL). At last year's development camp, Larsson told the Free Press his groin moved 11 millimeters off the pubic bone. Larsson said he was advised the injury would heal on its own, but that didn't happen and he underwent surgery in September.

Larsson debuted with the Pioneers in late November. He was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference's goalie of the month for December, and finished the season 14-6-2 with a .932 save percentage and 1.94 goals-against average.

Larsson's signing sheds some light on who will be in net next season for the Griffins. This season duties have been split between Patrik Rybar (16-16-5 with a .908 save percentage and 2.49 goals-against average) and Harri Sateri (22-11-5 with a .899 save percentage and 2.84 GAA). Rybar, 25, is a pending restricted free agent and Sateri, 29, unrestricted.
