What are the Best Car Brands?

Ryan Bhandari  |

Buying a new car can be a stressful endeavor for even the most devoted gearhead. Comparing different models from different companies can be a drawn-out and draining nightmare. But the fact is, it’s never a good idea to cut corners, as there are always some brands that are better than others.

Buying a New Car: Where to Start?

When buying a new car, figure out what type of model you want (sedan, coupe, SUV, wagon, etc.) and then compare the models among these 10 brands, which have been named as the best by the Consumer Reports 2015 Car Brand Report Card:

The luxury carmaker and subsidiary of Toyota ranks number one on the Consumer Reports list receiving the highest rating for reliability. Since its introduction to the United States in 1989, Lexus has achieved tremendous success, and today they continue to produce high-quality automobiles. Some of Lexus’s popular models include the ES 350, IS 250, and CT 200 Hatchback.

The Japanese automaker comes in at number two on the Consumer Reports Car Brand Report Card. Most of Mazda’s cars sell for under $30,000 MSRP, which means you won’t break the bank when buying or leasing one of their cars. Some of Mazda’s most popular vehicles include the CX-5, CX-9, Mazda3, and Mazda5.

Coming in at number three is the largest automaker in the entire world. They didn’t become so popular by accident – reliability, sustainability and affordability have always been part of the Toyota DNA. They painted every street corner of West Los Angeles with a Prius, but they also produce the most popular car in the world: the Corolla.

The next brand on the report card is Audi. If you have deep pockets, this German carmaker should be on the top of your list. As a luxury brand, Audi has always done a great job of separating themselves from the competition. Some of their most popular models include the A3, A5, A6, Q5, S3, and if you want to splurge: the breathtaking R8.

This automaker has always quietly made great cars. In addition to being the fifth best car brand according to Consumer Reports, Subaru also received the 2015 Kelley Blue Book Awardfor Best Performance Brand. Some popular Subaru models include the BRZ Coupe, Forester SUV, and Impreza.

The high-end luxury carmaker comes in at number six on the Consumer Reports Report Card. Porsche was also the winner of the 2015 Kelley Blue Book Award for best overall luxury car brand. Porsche has always had an excellent reputation in the auto industry and today they continue to produce excellent vehicles, even as they operate as a subsidiary of Volkswagen. Some popular Porsche models include the 911 Coupe, 911 GT3, Boxster, Cayenne, and Panamera.

This next car company has historically been a laughing stock in the industry – so much so that their new ad campaigns features consumers who can’t believe they’re looking at a Buick. (Because the car they’re looking at is actually nice) Buick’s rise to the top has certainly been impressive. Some of their popular models include the Enclave, Lacrosse, and Cascada.

Coming in at number eight is Honda. Fun fact: the Honda Accord is the car that gets stolen the mostin the United States. That could be a good sign though: Honda makes good cars and thieves know it. Honda was actually awarded the 2015 Kelley Blue Book Award for Overall Brand. Hondas are good, relatively cheap cars that should be at the top of any budget buyer’s list. Some popular models include the Accord, Civic, and CR-V.

Another car brand that has resurfaced with vengeance is Kia. Thanks to the help of Clipper’s superstar Blake Griffin, people actually know what Kia is these days because they make good cars for him to dunk over. And they’re pretty cheap too. Some popular models include the Forte, K900, and Optima.

Rounding out our top 10 is BMW, one of the most well-known and well-respected automakers in the business. You can never go wrong with BMW. As long you have the money, a beamer is always going to treat you right. Some of their most popular models (or series) include the 3 series, 5 series, and 6 series (which includes my favorite ride: the M6).

All and all, if you are looking to buy a car, you can't go wrong with one of these ten brands. The important thing in the process of buying a car is to always know what you're looking for and to never settle for less than eactly what you want.
