The New Los Angeles Rams, Stan Kroenke, and the Greatest Proposal in Sports

It was not just the stadium that won over fellow owners at a meeting in Houston, but the sheer scope of the plan and what it would mean for the community of Inglewood, California. Stan Kroenke, the NFL’s second wealthiest owner worth an estimated $7.7 billion, is a Missouri native who has grown his wealth developing strip malls across the country. It also helps that he is married to the daughter of Walmart co-founder Bud Walton. Besides the Rams, Kroenke owns the Colorado Avalanche, the Denver Nuggets, Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids, and National Lacrosse’s Colorado Mammoth. “Silent Stan” as they call him in St. Louis also owns an English soccer club, media entities, and wineries. Kroenke is more than just a Missouri native; he was named after the St. Louis Cardinal greats Stan Musial and Enos Slaughter. However, the idea of returning to LA with the Rams at the old Hollywood Park Racetrack was too irresistible.

In short, the multi-billion dollar stadium plan, which is privately funded, will be an entertainment, retail, and residential complex. The glass, retractable roof will sit over a stadium that can hold 80, 000 fans. The space will have 890,000 square feet for retail shops and 780,000 square feet for office space. Most important, the stadium and complex will create an estimated 40,000 jobs for the Inglewood area plus tens of millions in annual revenue for the city. After listening to the presentation, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, an Inglewood native, called it “the greatest proposal in sports.” L.A. fans were obviously overjoyed at the news, while St. Louis fans skewered Kroenke for ignoring their loyalty and passion. Either way, the NFL owners plan to reap massive profits from the reentry into the Los Angeles area.
