Siemens Gets Approval for First Seven Tesla MRI in the US

Equities Research  |

Advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have led to dramatic improvements in the diagnosis of brain, spinal cord and other bodily injuries since its inception in the 1970s. Last week, Siemens (OTC: SIEGY) received FDA approval for the first seven tesla (7T) MRI device for clinical use in the US, reinforcing the company's dominant position in 7T devices globally. 65% of the world's 7T MRI scanners are made by Siemens.

“The overall image quality of MRI improves with higher magnetic field strength,” according to Robert Ochs, PhD, director of the Division of Radiological Health in the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “The added field strength allows for better visualization of smaller structures and subtle pathologies that may improve disease diagnosis.”

MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields and radio waves to generate images. The machines come in different magnet field strengths measured in tesla. Prior to the FDA's approval of Siemens' Magnetom Terra device, clinical MRI systems were available in field strengths of up to only 3T.

Siemens' new machine offers clinicians the potential for:

  • Better lesion discernment
  • Faster image acquisition to reduce motion artifacts
  • Earlier disease detection
