WASHINGTON, -- The office of Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nevada, issued the following statement announcing Keibi Mejia, a junior at the University of Nevada, Reno, majoring in Political Science and International Affairs and a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient, as her office's Spring 2018 first-generation intern scholarship recipient.

Keibi Mejia will work on behalf of the people of Nevada assisting the Senator's Reno office with constituent services, researching legislative issues and community outreach. Those interested in learning more about Senator Cortez Masto's internship program may find further information here.

"Since being sworn-in to my seat in the United States Senate, I have made tearing down barriers and creating opportunities for greater diversity in our country a top priority.

"Women, especially women of color, continue to be underrepresented in the Senate, boardrooms, and businesses across the country. That disparity is amplified for young men and women that come from economically disadvantaged or first-generation backgrounds that lack the network of support, financial resources, and professional development opportunities.

"This is unacceptable. And that is why I am so proud to welcome Keibi Mejia to my office, a Dreamer, achiever, and proud Latina who has studied hard and made the honor roll as a student at Damonte Ranch High School, is putting herself through college at the University of Nevada, Reno, and finds the time to also work as an Administrative Assistant for a small business in Reno. I'm proud to have her on my team and I look forward to seeing the path she blazes for first-generation college students that come after her."

"It's a huge honor to be the spring 2018 recipient of Senator Cortez Masto's first-generation internship scholarship," said Keibi Mejia. "As a first-generation student interested in pursuing a career in public policy, I am grateful for the opportunity to have firsthand experience on the issues confronting my state. My time in this internship will give me the chance to get firsthand experience engaging with Nevadans, learning more about public policy, and provides me with a chance to use my voice to share my experience. For me this internship reflects the values of hard work and sacrifice that my immigrant parents taught me."
