Chicago, IL (PRWEB) July 09, 2014
Ocean Tomo, LLC, the intellectual capital merchant banc™ firm, announced today the publishing of the 2014 Eureka Index, exclusively in the June 30th issue of Crain’s Detroit Business. The Index recognizes high quality patents issued by the USPTO in 2013 to Southeast Michigan companies. Ocean Tomo also released further insight from the study including report data acknowledging high quality patents issued to companies and institutions throughout Michigan.
The Eureka index, published by Crain’s Detroit Business, ranks the top 25 companies and institutions in Southeast Michigan with three or more issued patents in 2013 based on patent quality. An expanded listing of the Top 50 Companies and Institutions in Southeast Michigan released by Ocean Tomo is available today. The study was performed using the Ocean Tomo Ratings™ System for Patents Issued by the USPTO. The system generates an OTR™ Score for all patents, which is an objective and statistically valid assessment of individual patents, and collectively patent portfolios. Derived from the same study, Ocean Tomo released today an expanded list of the Top 75 Michigan Companies and Institutions.
Expanding the study geography to include the entire state of Michigan brings seven new companies to the Top 25 ranking, including Magna Mirrors of America, Inc., ENDOCLEAR, Cheetah Omni LLC, Inrad Optics, Gentext Corp., Illumisys, LLC, and Stryker.
Ocean Tomo Managing Director, Dr. N. Darius Sankey observes “this year’s Crain’s Detroit Eureka Index Ranking includes ten companies whose average OTR Score is above 144 placing those companies’ patents among the top 8\% of all US rated patents.” Dr. Sankey leads Ocean Tomo’s Innovation Management business unit which includes the firm’s Venture Development practice and provides operating company clients an outsourced venture capital service platform to accelerate innovation while managing risk.
Two stand-out sectors are highlighted in the Ocean Tomo study results. Heathcare equipment and electronic equipment are two sectors where the patents issued in 2013 to Michigan companies are meaningfully higher than the US average for that technology class. Dr. Sankey notes, “among the top ten companies, CytoPherx, Inc. and Henry Ford Health System issued patents in United States Patent Class (USPC) 604 – Surgery having an average OTR Score of 157.6 compared with the national average for the class of 115.9.”
In the electronic equipment sector , the patents filed by Cybernet Systems Corp in USPC 709, electrical computers and digital processing systems: multicomputer data transferring, have an average OTR Score of 149.83 compared to the national average of 113.

Deep employee engagement is vital – what are the best ways to build it?
Many people think of position size in terms of how many shares they own of a particular stock. But it’s much smarter to think of it in terms of what percentage of your total capital is in a particular stock.
