Markets Media Women in Finance Awards Highlights the Success and Challenges of Female Business Leaders

Daniel Banas  |

In recent years, women have been making significant inroads in the business world, and 2016 seems to have been the year when the issue took hold of the cultural dialogue in a very significant way. However, there are many fields where women still have a long way to go when it comes to parity with men, and one of those is indisputably finance, which the people behind this past Wednesday’s Markets Media’s 2nd Annual Markets Choice Women in Finance Awards are seeking to change.

This year’s Women in Finance Awards took place at the trendy pan-Asian eatery Tao in downtown Manhattan, and featured more than 250 participants from banks, brokerage firms, exchanges, Fintech companies and technology providers, all with a common goal of recognizing talented women working in capital markets. And this year certainly brought no shortage of women to recognize and celebrate - and not just the award winners, but speakers and presenters as well.

Not the least of which is Cristina Mariani-May, Co-CEO of Banfi Wines, who kicked off the event with a keynote speech emphasizing the importance of entrepreneurs acknowledging their environment and giving back to the community. “Surround yourself with good people you can trust,” Mariani-May urged the audience, as covered by Title Connection. “Also, don’t forget to give back, educate, mentor and only embark on things you are passionate about.”

Mariani-May also emphasized the need for stress management and gave some great advice on how best to do it – a message that just about all of us could relate to! “Pick up your glass of water and hold it for an hour, your arm aches,” Mariani-May said. “Hold it all day and you will want to call an ambulance. Just remember to put the glass down. Get rid of [the stress you’re carrying] and be gone with it.”

Following Mariani-May’s opening keynote, the awards segment of the event commenced, starting with the Crystal Ladder award, presented by Market Media CEO Mohan Virdee. The award is given out to women who work their way from entry-level positions to senior management. This year’s recipient was Tami Schademann, Chief Regulatory Officer at BATS Global Markets, who shared an inspirational story and was recognized for her remarkable professional journey.

While it was no doubt an exciting day for enterprising women, there was also an emphasis on the advantages of diversity for women and men alike. “There is a lot of great momentum currently around diversity and women’s issues, which we must capitalize upon. More organizations should focus on the fact that overall diversity impacts the bottom line,” said Silvia Davi. "I was honored to serve on the advisory board for the Markets Media and Traders Magazine 'Women In Finance Awards.' It was both encouraging and inspiring to be in a room packed with such dynamic and smart women. It was also refreshing to see male executives at the event as it is very important to include men so they can champion for female leaders and join the dialogue,” Davi said.

Davi presented the Excellence in Exchanges Award, which went to Adena Friedman, the incoming CEO of Nasdaq, and the The Achievement in Diversity award, which went to Tina Byles Williams, CEO and CIO of FIS Group. Davi has been a vocal proponent of women in leadership positions for some time across various industries and also participated in today’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Day at the UN. Earlier this year she debuted the Equities Women's Council, a community focused on empowering businesswomen and female entrepreneurs to share best practices and raise awareness of gender-focused success stories and unique challenges women face in today’s business community.
