Longtime Cuyahoga Falls hardware store closes

Akron Beacon Journal |

--A longtime hardware store in Cuyahoga Falls has closed doors.

John McCain, the owner of Falls Hardware on State Road, officially shut down the business in early May.

"It's been emotional," McCain said. "I'm still speechless."

McCain declined to comment further on his store's closure.

Formerly known as Loomis Hardware, the store was located on the corner of Front Street and Portage Trail in the 1920s, according to the Cuyahoga Falls Historical Society, which has archived several photos and old newspapers articles about the store.

The building was owned by L.W. Loomis, or "Mr. Loomis" as he was known in town.

The building, along with one other, was damaged in the 1940s in a large fire, which firefighters from Cuyahoga Falls, Akron, Kent, Tallmadge and other surrounding cities fought for four hours.

Loomis Hardware then moved to State Road and, under new management, changed its name to Falls Hardware.

Jeanne Wunderle, the president of the Cuyahoga Falls Historical Society, has a personal history attached to the business.

Her aunt, Liliann Harrington Broske, worked at Loomis Hardware for 50 years.

Broske worked there long enough to know the location and the price of every single item in the store, Wunderle said.

Wunderle recalled visiting the store whenever her aunt worked.

"It was a nice, little hardware store," Wunderle said. "Nothing too fancy. Everyone was super nice and everything was so neat."

Since the store's move to State Road, the street has undergone several changes. The city demolished the deteriorating buildings in the State Road Plaza in 2008 and the road is no longer the main thoroughfare headed north.

The hardware store used to sit along an older section of one of the city's main retail corridors -- a section that was made to seem even more antiquated with the glitzy addition of the Portage Crossing development.

The hardware store's closure comes as a Menards big-box home improvement store is getting ready to open nearby on Graham Road this summer.

Falls Hardware is holding an auction for the remainder of its items . Harold R. Farnsworth LLC will be conducting the auction.
