United Airlines Holdings Inc (NYSE: UAL) announced a deal Thursday with Boom Supersonic to purchase 15 of the Denver-based startup’s supersonic jets with an option for 35 more.

Under the agreement, United will purchase Boom’s “Overture” jet once the planes meet United's “demanding safety, operating and sustainability requirements,” the companies said in a joint press release.

Investment in energy is on track to recover by nearly 10% in 2021 as the world emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said on Wednesday, but spending will fall far short of meeting urgent climate goals.

More of the $1.9 trillion in investment is projected to shift toward electricity than ever, with more than $820 billion due to earmarked for power - the sixth year in a row it will outstrip investment in traditional oil and gas.

Germany’s highest court ruled Thursday that the government’s climate protection plan was insufficient to protect future generations, ordering officials to set clear goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions after 2030.

In its ruling, the Bundesverfassungsgericht, or Federal Constitutional Court, said Berlin’s reduction plan was “incompatible with fundamental rights” because it failed to cover the years beyond this decade and would “irreversibly offload major emission reduction burdens onto periods after 2030.”

BASF SE, the world’s largest chemicals producer by sales, announced Friday it is setting “even more ambitious goals” to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. 

After progress in developing low-emission and CO2-free technologies, the German chemicals major said it is raising its medium-term 2030 target for greenhouse gas emissions and wants to slash emissions 25% from its 2018 levels over the next decade.

Another 20 companies have signed The Climate Pledge, a commitment to reduce carbon emissions that was launched by Amazon.com Inc (Nasdaq: AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos.

Created in 2019, The Climate Pledge encourages corporations to collaborate and share technologies, best practices and other innovations to help address critical climate challenges. Amazon.com Inc unveiled plans Monday to buy half of the energy produced by a huge new subsidy-free wind farm in the Netherlands.

The e-commerce giant said it reached a deal with The CrossWind consortium, a joint venture between Royal Dutch Shell and Mitsubishi Corp’s sustainable energy company Eneco, to purchase green energy, which will help Amazon reach its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2025, five years before its target.
