The legalization of marijuana for recreational use in Colorado and Washington represented a major sea change for American public policy, one that appears to be headed for a national scale. And as that debate intensifies, one element that's getting explored is how legalization might affect the American economy. Like it or not, Washington and Colorado have just volunteered to act as canaries in the coal mine for the rest of the country.

And, according to this infographic produced by SuretyBonds, legal marijuana companies could become a big business. Not only could they spark growth in the American economy, but the potential for new tax revenues could be significant. While it's clearly still years away, an America with legalized marijuana might at least be one where growing and selling cannabis is a major industry.
