The national ISM manufacturing index came in a weaker than expected 49.5 in November. Construction Spending rose by a better than expected 1.4% in October. The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded up to 13,087.32 then dipped to 12,959.42 trading back and forth around the 200-day simple moving average at 12,996.50. The Nasdaq traded up to 3030.28 then dipped to 2999.57 staying above its 200-day SMA at to 2987.50.

Asian stocks were mixed on Monday. The Nikkei 225 closed at 9458 – up 0.13%. The Hang Seng closed at 21,768 – down 1.19%. European exchanges closed higher on Monday. The FTSE 100 ended the day at 5,871 – up 0.08%. The DAX ended the day at 7,435 – up 0.40%. The CAC 40 ended the day at 3,567 – up 0.26%. The yield on the 10-Year US Treasury rose from 1.610% to 1.656% staying below the 50-day and 200-day simple moving averages at 1.680% and 1.760%.

Comex gold rallied from $1714.2 the Troy ounce to $1724.9 below the 50-day simple moving average at $1737.5 with the 200-day SMA at $1665.4. Nymex crude oil rebounded from $88.66 per barrel to $90.33 and is now between the 50-day and 200-day simple moving averages at $88.56 and $93.75. The euro versus the dollar rallied from 1.2992 to 1.3074 above its 50-day and 200-day simple moving averages at 1.2905 and 1.2791.

Energy

Australia’s Woodside Petroleum (WOPEF) has agreed to acquire a 30% stake in Israel’s huge Leviathan offshore gas field from the operators of the reserve, which include Noble Energy (NBL) and Delek Drilling (DKDRF). Total S.A. (TOT) is moved to Buy from Hold at Deutsche Bank. Occidental Petroleum (OXY) and Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A) each get Hold-from-Buy downgrades at Deutsche Bank. Big Movers – Longwei Petroleum Investment (LPH) is up about 14%. James River Coal (JRCC) is down about 10%. Dow components – Chevron (CVX) is down about 1%. Exxon Mobil (XOM) is down about 0.5%. Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) was trading at $70.69 at 3:30 PM on Monday, down 0.52% on the day – up 2.26% year-to-date.

After trying the friendly tack and then the hostile one, Martin Marietta Materials (MLM) will reportedly again try the friendly approach in its long-running attempt to acquire larger building-materials rival Vulcan Materials (VMC). Amid a fall in iron ore prices this year, Vale (VALE) is expected to unveil a 2013 investment budget of $15.1B at its annual Vale Day meeting with shareholders today. Agrium (AGU) is raised to Overweight from Neutral at Piper Jaffray. CF Industries (CF) is now Neutral from Overweight at Piper Jaffray. Dow Components – Alcoa (AA) is up about 0.5%. Singapore Airlines (SINGY) has confirmed widespread reports that it’s in talks to sell its 49% holding in Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic, with those reports saying that a potential suitor is Delta Air Lines (DAL). The Speea union has circulated a letter “asking members to ignore the call for a (one-day) wildcat strike” at Boeing (BA), which has been planned for Wednesday. Dow components – Boeing Co (BA) is down about 0.4%. Caterpillar (CAT) is down about 0.5%. General Electric (GE) is down about 1%. 3M Company (MMM) is down about 0.7%.
