Equities Sector Coverage: Stocks Rebound, Show Strong Rally After Fed Statement

Wall Street Stock Market BullIf the Dow Jones Industrial Average were trading overnight it would have tested its 200-week and 120-month simple moving averages at 10,742 and 10,570. The morning range for the Dow was 10,803.76 to 11,052.49 with strength on the hopes of something positive from the FOMC meeting this afternoon. The NASDAQ opened higher on Tuesday, declined to 2363.47 then rebounded to 2445.77 in morning trading before the Fed Statement. The Federal Reserve said it will likely keep interest rates at record lows (0 – 0.25% funds rate) into mid-2013, acknowledging the economy is weaker than it had thought and faces increasing risks. The initial reaction to the FOMC meeting pushed the Dow to a low of 10604.07 and the NASDAQ to a low of 2331.65, before rallying to new highs for the day of 11244.01 (up about 4%) and 2483.66 (up about 5.3%).

Asian stocks slumped again on Tuesday following Monday’s 635 point drop for the Dow Industrial Average. Despite recovering from session lows the Nikkei 225 declined 1.68% to 8,994. The Hang Seng plunged 5.66% to 19,331. European stocks opened significantly lower but recovered during their sessions. The closes were mixed with the FTSE 100 up by 1.84% to 5,162. The DAX slipped by 0.10% to 5,917. The CAC 40 re-gained 1.63% to 3,176. The yield on the 10-Year US Treasury note declined to 2.268 on the flight to quality overnight, but then rose to 2.436 as global equities stabilized. The US Treasury auctioned $32 billion in 3-Year notes on Tuesday at 0.50% with a 3.29 bid to cover ratio. The Indirect Bid, which includes buy orders from foreign central banks, was a strong 47.9% passing a test that there is strong demand for AA+ rated US Treasuries. The US Treasury auctions $24 billion 10-Year notes on Wednesday and $16 billion in 30-Year bonds on Thursday. Gold rallied to yet another all-time high of $1782.5 the Troy ounce then consolidated within a trading range with the low end being the overnight low at $1717.7. Crude oil slumped to $75.71 per barrel in overnight trading and rose as high as $83.05 in the US trading session before consolidating. The euro versus the US dollar traded up from 1.4155 to 1.4345 in an orderly rebound within a trading range.

Energy

Inergy L.P. (NRGY) missed estimates by 13 cents, but beat revenue by $17.7M. Carrizo Oil & Gas (CRZO) beat estimates by a penny, but missed revenue by $2.5M. Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (EPD) beat estimates by 6 cents on revenue of $302.8M. Ensco (ESV) missed estimates by 9 cents, but beat revenue by $30M. In afternoon trading: Shares of General Maritime (GMR) are up about 19.5%.
