Asian stocks were mixed on Monday with the Nikkei 225 closed at 8,390, and the Hang Seng ending their session at 18,866 – up 1.47% on the day. European stocks were also mixed on Monday. The FTSE 100 ended their session at 5,612 – down 0.66% on the day; the DAX ended their session at 6,017 – down 0.67% on the day; and the CAC 40 ended their session at 3,146 – up 0.28% on the day.
The yield on the 10-Year US Treasury note declined from 1.986 percent to 1.918 versus its 50-day simple moving average at 1.983. Gold traded up from $1605.7 the Troy ounce to $1624.6 then consolidated this move, which was below its 200-day simple moving average at $1627.8. Crude oil declined from $102.15 per barrel to $100.10 staying above its 50-day and 200-day simple moving averages at $98.02 and $95.70. The euro versus the dollar traded to another new 52-week low at 1.2670 than rebounded to 1.2785.
Sunoco (SUN) is now Neutral from Outperform at Macquarie. In afternoon trading: Shares of Gulf Keystone Petroleum (GUKYF) are up about 11.75%. Shares of Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) are up about 10.25%. Shares of ECA Marcellus Trust (ECT) are down about 10.5%. Shares of Treaty Energy (TECO) are down about 9%.
Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) was trading at $70.78 at 4:00 PM on Monday, up 0.48% on the day – up 2.39% year-to-date. The 2011 change was +1.29%.
Alcoa (AA), which announced major restructuring charges last week, is due to get earnings season underway today, with analysts expecting that Q4 EPS tumbled to $0.01 from $0.24 last year despite an increase in revenue to $5.78B from $5.65B. Antofagasta plc (ANFGY) is cut to Sell from Neutral at Citigroup. Southern Copper (SCCO) is downgraded to Hold from Buy at Deutsche Bank. In afternoon trading: Shares of Rare Element (REE) are up about 14.00%. Shares of China Shen Zhou (SHZ) are up about 13%. Shares of China GengSheng (CHGS) are up about 10%.

Banks will be permitted to go below minimum liquidity levels during financial crises to avoid cash-flow difficulties, although they'll have to hold emergency stocks of easy-to-sell assets, the Basel Committee said today. Trading in the rights to buy into UniCredit's (UNCFF) €7.5B ($9.5B) capital raising, which began today, have been suspended and indicated -37.5%.
