Initial Jobless Claims came in at 351,000 in the latest week and last week’s reading was revised upward to 351,000. This means that claims are on the cusp of trending below the 350,000 recessionary thresholds – which has been the floor for claims since the end of 2007.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined to 12,882.67 at the open then rebounded to 12,996.08 by noon. The day’s range held with the Dow at the upper end going into the final half hour of trading. The NASDAQ opened lower to 2922.96 then rebounded to 2956.09 by noon. After trading sideways in afternoon trading the NASDAQ traded to a day’s high into the final half hour of trading. The S&P 500, Dow Transports and Russell 2000 continue to lag their 2011 highs at 1370.58, 5627.85 and 868.57 respectively.

Asian stocks were mixed on Thursday with the Nikkei 225 ending their session 9,596 – up 0.44% on the day. The Hang Seng ended their session at 21,381 – down 0.78% on the day. European stocks were also mixed on Thursday. The FTSE 100 ended their session at 5,939 – up 0.38% on the day, the DAX ended their session at 6,809 down 0.50% on the day, and the CAC 40 ended their session at 3,447 – flat on the day. The yield on the 10-Year US Treasury declined from 2.045 percent to 1.972. Gold traded up from $1773.3 the Troy ounce to $1789.5. Crude oil traded down from $106.80 per barrel to $105.45 then rebounded to $108.24. The euro versus the dollar traded up from 1.3234 to 1.3372.

Energy

Anadarko Petroleum (APC) and BP (BP) are liable for civil damages related to the Gulf oil spill, District Judge Carl Barbier ruled yesterday, exposing the two firms to billions of dollars in potential fines. Tenaris (TS) reported Q4 EPS of $0.68 (versus consensus of $0.32) on revenue of $2.75B. Helix Energy Solutions Group (HLX) reported Q4 EPS of -$0.16 (versus consensus of $0.32), while beating revenue by $66M. Stone Energy (SGY) beat estimates by 16 cents and revenue by $24M. Williams Companies (WMB) missed estimates by 4 cents.

Target (TGT) beat estimates by 5 cents, while missing revenue by $300M. The company sees 2012 EPS of $4.55-4.75 against consensus $4.28. Kohl’s (KSS) beat estimates by a penny with revenue in-line with estimates. DISH Network (DISH) beat estimates by 9 cents with revenue in-line with estimates. Jack in the Box (JACK) reported FQ1 EPS of $0.25 (versus consensus of $0.24), while beating revenue by $23M. Caribou Coffee (CBOU) beat estimates by a penny and revenue by $4M. Limited Brands’ (LTD) FQ4 beat estimates, but the company expects FQ1 EPS of $0.35-$0.40 (below a $0.44 consensus). In addition, Limited expects FY13 EPS of $2.60-$2.80 (also below a consensus of $2.91). Dana Holding (DAN) and Borg Warner (BWA) are both begun with Buys at Crédit Agricole. CEC Entertainment (CEC) is moved to Outperform from Market Perform with a $44 objective by brokers Morgan Keegan. DIRECTV (DTV) is now Overweight from Neutral at Atlantic Equities. Boston Beer’s (SAM) Q4 beats EPS and revenue estimates on a 46% jump in profit as the brewer of Sam Adams beer posted an increase in shipment volumes and a successful pass-through of higher prices. Kellogg (K) gets a Buy-from-Hold hoist at Deutsche Bank. Pilgrim’s Pride (PPC) gets increased to Outperform from In Line at Imperial Capital, which also takes its price target up by $3 to $9.

Express Scripts (ESRX) missed estimates by 3 cents, while beating revenue by $500M. Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN) is taken to Buy from Neutral at UBS. Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) beat earnings expectations yesterday ($0.92 vs. $0.87 consensus) but came in short on revenue ($30B vs. $30.7B consensus). The company expects FQ2 EPS of $0.88-$0.91, below $0.95 consensus, and reiterated guidance for FY12 EPS of $4, below $4.08 consensus. Citing concerns that recent changes to Google’s (GOOG) privacy policy raise the risk of identity theft and fraud, 36 state AGs sent Larry Page a letter outlining their issues with the changes. Analog Devices (ADI) missed estimates by 2 cents and revenue by $14M. The company also lowered FQ2 guidance to below Street estimates. United Online (UNTD) beat estimates by 5 cents with revenue in-line with estimates. Novatel Wireless (NVTL) beat estimates by 9 cents, while missing revenue by $4M. Newport (NEWP) missed estimates by 9 cents with revenue in-line with estimates. ManTech International (MANT) missed estimates by 4 cents and revenue by $28M.
