Catskill Confidential: Help clean up the Basha Kill for Earth Day

--The Basha Kill Area Association is hosting its 37th Annual Basha Kill Clean-Up on Saturday to celebrate , which is Sunday.

Participants are encouraged to wear boots and work gloves and use insect repellent. Garbage bags will be provided.

The association will serve lunch. Participants are encouraged to bring folding chairs, since lunch will be outside.

Registration and site assignments take place from in the New York Department of Environmental Conservation parking lot on Haven Road in the Town of Mamakating.

Eligible residents can apply for home-repair funds

Money is available for low-income homeowners in Sullivan County to repair their houses.

The Rural Sullivan Housing Corporation recently received a $450,000 HOME repair grant from New York State Homes and Community Renewal.

The funds are intended to resolve code violations, improve energy efficiency and make health and safety fixes.

Shari Trust, executive director of the corporation, said she expects the money to help 18 homeowners with grants up to $20,000.

VA to hold town hall event for the public



The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Hudson Valley Health Care System is hosting a town hall for veterans, their family members and the public next week.

The town hall is scheduled for on in the legislators' meeting room at the Sullivan County Government Center, 100 North St. in Monticello.

VA officials are also inviting congressional stakeholders, veteran service organizations and other community groups.

Workshop will focus on starting a business

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan County will hold a workshop on business planning next week.

Charlene Finerty of Plans & Profits LLC will instruct attendees on how to create a business plan.

The workshop will be from at the Extension Education Center, 64 Ferndale-Loomis Road in Liberty.

Another identical workshop will be held .

The workshop fee is $15 per person or $10 per CCESC enrollee.
