BioBots May Totally Wipe Out the Organ Donor Waiting List

Stephen L Kanaval  |

The concept of BioBots starts simple enough: a 3-D printer. We have written about 3-D printers here at Equities many times. However, we have never seen them like this. BioBots 3-D printer prints human cells. You may wonder what the market is for something like this, but think about organ donor wait times—a liver donor patient may wait close to five years! BioBots has the solution.

BioBots made a big splash at TechCrunch Display where they printed a 3-D replica of Vincent Van Gogh’s ear. Talk about a mic drop! Since then, the company has worked with over 50 research facilities worldwide.

“At the moment your printer at home has different color cartridges. Our dream is to have that but for skin, lung and liver tissues,” co-founder Danny Cabrera told TechWorld in an interview last week. The company’s flagship printer, the BioBots 1, sells for a reasonable $10,000 and with the same convenience of a desktop printer, will print materials using collagen, gelatin, PEG, aliginate or anything else that will move through a syringe. All this from a 12 inch x 12 inch x 12 inch cube that uses visible blue light to rapidly cure biomaterials quickly and, unlike some of the other curing technologies used in other 3D bioprinters, doesn’t cause harm to cells.

In addition, BioBots has a portion of their website titled “Build with Life” where they hope to establish the first open wiki of biological information about 3D bioprinting.
