Aqua Metals (AQMS) is Redefining Lead Recycling Technology

Stephen L Kanaval  |

Aqua Metals (AQMS) is redefining a $22 billion industry. In May, we wrote about the company’s deal with Interstate Batteries and the $10 million investment the company put into AQMS. Here is a quote from that article by Interstate’s CEO Scott Miller: ‘“Interstate Batteries seeks out innovation, pursues opportunities and invests in the technology we need to succeed not just today, but also tomorrow… Our focus is on the future of our industry and continued growth. Aqua Metals’ breakthrough technology is a promising new way for recycling lead-acid batteries.”’ The breakthrough technology referenced there is AQMS’s AquaRefining™ modular electrochemical process that produces pure lead from used lead-acid batteries. The old process of smelting old batteries releases toxic emissions, while AquaRefining is much safer with no emissions.

Aqua Metals is looking at a scalable business that can latch onto a well-oiled, preexisting product: the lead acid battery. Recycling lead could be extremely profitable because batteries are $44 billion dollar industry with $22 billion from that number going to the sheer cost of lead. Lead production has slowed because of high cost and now more and more producers are using recycled lead. AQMS and the AquaRefining process are cheaper, less pollutant and scale easily (since the machines are much easier to turn off than smelting equipment). Competitors with the same technology are nowhere to be found and many don’t even still believe this is possible, but AQMS is doing it easily and cheaply.

AQMS plans on operating near battery producers and partnering with established companies like Interstate for a steady supply of batteries. With little competition and low production costs, Aqua Metals is one to watch.

Aqua Metals will be presenting at the Roth Conference December 13, 2016 in New York. Click Here for registration information
