Simon Property Group is the second-largest real estate investment trust in the United States. Its portfolio includes an interest in 207 properties: 106 traditional malls, 69 premium outlets, 14 Mills centers (a combination of a traditional mall, outlet center, and big-box retailers), four lifestyle centers, and 14 other retail properties. Simon's portfolio averaged $693 in sales per square foot over the past 12 months. Two of Penney's biggest landlords, Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management, have acquired nearly all such assets.
Under the original agreement announced in February, Taubman shareholders were to receive $52.50 per share in cash.
Mall owners Simon Property Group and Brookfield Property Partners have teamed up to acquire J.C. Penney’s retail operations and are putting the finishing touches on an agreement.
The two companies have explored converting retail space formerly occupied by JC Penney and Sears into Amazon distribution centers, while in some cases, Simon and Amazon explored buying out occupied space from the retailers.
Stocks shrugged off a wobbly start to finish solidly higher on Wall Street Monday, as the market clawed back half its losses from last week.
The S&P 500 fell 0.6% to 3,097.74. Dow Industrials dropped 0.8% to 25,871.46 after a day of big swings. The Nasdaq composite inched up less than 0.1%, to 9,946.12.
