How the major US stock indexes fared on Thursday

A late recovery on Wall Street wiped out most of the stock market's losses Thursday. The Dow had been down as much as 177 points but came back sharply in the last 20 minutes of trading.

Insurance stocks fell after the Supreme Court upheld most of President Obama's health care law. The stocks of hospital operators rose.

JPMorgan Chase fell after The New York Times reported that its loss from a complex financial trade could swell to $9 billion from a previously reported $2 billion.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 24.75 points, or 0.2 percent, at 12,602.26.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 2.81 points, 0.2 percent, to 1,329.04

The Nasdaq composite average fell 25.83 points, 0.9 percent, to 2,849.49.

For the week:

The Dow is down 38.52 points, or 0.3 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 5.98 points, or 0.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 42.93 points, or 1.5 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 384.70 points, or 3.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 71.44 points, or 5.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 244.34 points, or 9.4 percent.
