Suriname vice president arrives in Turkey [Caribbean News Now, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands]

March 07--ISTANBUL, Turkey -- A large trade delegation comprised of 25 Surinamese companies headed by Vice President Robert Ameerali of Suriname, a small South American country rich in minerals, oil and a pristine rainforest of untapped natural resources, has arrived in Turkey at the invitation of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Ameerali was received by President Abdullah Gul upon his arrival in Istanbul.

It is the highest level of visit between Suriname and Turkey since they established diplomatic ties in 1976.

On Thursday, Ameerali will be in Ankara holding talks with Prime Minister Erdogan. The delegations from both countries will hold bilateral discussions to enhance political and economic relations, as well as various regional issues and areas of cooperation in the international arena.

In Istanbul, Ameerali and his business delegation will meet with Turkish investors who are interested in Suriname's tourism, mining, lumber and agriculture sectors. Most of the business delegation will remain in Istanbul to engage in meetings with Turkish businesses.

The Turks are active the hotel industry in Suriname.

Two Wall Street credit-rating agencies, Fitch and Moody's have given Suriname excellent financial ratings, which have improved the country's investment prospects. According to the agencies, political, economic and fiscal policies have created a stable market, allowing Suriname to replace its devalued currency.

Besides China, Suriname has been attracting major investments and trade from Canada and the United Arab Emirates.
