Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) December 03, 2012

On December 3, Colle Farmers Market releases a statement responding to an article published by the New York Times highlighting the efforts of Haitian farmers to rebuild after they were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy.

According to a New York Times article, Haitians farmers have been struggling to survive since the earthquake that hit in January 2010. However the article reports that since the hurricane, things are worse than ever. [M]en and women who farmed bananas, plantains, sugar cane, beans and breadfruit stare at fields swept of trees, still flooded or coated with river muck that will probably kill off whatever plants are left.

The article went on to explain the difficulties these farmers deal with even without the threat of storms. There is little irrigation to control the water, roads are so shot that produce spoils or is damaged before it reaches urban markets, and a good crop could yield about $1,000 for the year, the New York Times reports.

Colle Farmers Market, an online community focusing on organic farms, releases a statement in reaction to the devastation many Haitian farmers are facing. Colle hopes that these farmers as well as all the farmers affected by Sandy can make a full, quick recovery. However theyve noted that the road to recovery will be long; and they need a lot more help.

Colle is an E-Commerce enabled farmers market community that is passionate about sustainable consumption and responsible conservation. The Colle movement is dedicated to connecting natural product vendors, organic farmers and all consumers who live an organic and natural lifestyle with the ultimate goal of creating more sustainable farming and consumerism.
