The best on offer at GITEX Technology Week [Seven Days (United Arab Emirates)]

Al Bawaba Ltd.

Whoever said nobody walks in Dubai has never been to GITEX.

Dashing through the cavernous halls of the Dubai World Trade Centre at breakneck speed is the only way youre going to come close to getting a sneaky peek at the plethora of gizmos and gadgets about to whizz on to the market.

I got a glimpse of the Near Field Communication (NFC) smartphones that tech gurus have predicted will obliterate the need for cash. Igot dressed by the latest in super-smart shopping technology.

English football side Manchester City FC had the genuine trophy that team's captain Vincent Kompany hoisted high above his head back in May to celebrate the Abu Dhabi backed club's Premier League triumph

This will be why the Chinese are taking over the world. If ever a product was fit for Dubai - it's this. Fancy some sunglasses on your iPod and MP3 dock? Of course you do.

Running short of time to throw together a look before that taxi arrives? Or just too lazy to try clothes on in the fitting room? What you need is an electronic wardrobe

Rapper 50 Cent is dropping in to GITEX today to help launch SMS headphones - but we found a nifty little set yesterday hoping to Motor ahead of rap's bad boys - these are the 'Motorheadphones'

Sick of having to get colleagues to crowd around your smartphone to show them that crucial email or picture? Fear not - the future may involve boardrooms with even entire touchscreen walls or tables

Sebastien Tormos, director of mobile solutions and business development at Data Group is a unique man. He is only one of a few thousand people in the world that has an NFC and e-wallet enabled phone

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2, the King of GITEX Shopper, has been making waves at this week's tech event as well

LP.has("fader");

And Iwas told off by white-gloved steely-eyed gatekeepers for daring to try and get a touch of the iconic FA Premier League trophy, decked in Manchester City colours at telecom giant Etisalats stand. So without further ado, heres a little list of the seven things that caught my eye at the regions leading technology extravaganza.

AGALAXYNOT-SO-FAR-AWAY...

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2, the King of GITEX Shopper, has been making waves at this weeks tech event as well. The iPhone used to rule the roost. BlackBerry before that. Now theres competition between all three devices. And thats good news for all of us - the consumers.

REACHOUT ANDTOuCHTHEFUTURE

Sick of having to get colleagues to crowd around your smartphone to show them that crucial email or picture? Fear not - the future may involve boardrooms with even entire touchscreen walls or tables. Thats right - the whiteboard could be set to go the way of the blackboard.

At present, technology is largely confined to small smart devices such as mobile phones and tablets and mid-sized display screens with limited multi-touch capability, says Aseem Gupta, president of tech firm Arrive, of its Rave brand of multi-touch products. That means multiple users can touch, drag and pinch touchscreen displays up 10 metres in length. It could make meetings a lot more fun...

ASHADYDEALFORSPEAKERS

This will be why the Chinese are taking over the world. If ever a product was fit for Dubai - it's this. Fancy some sunglasses on your iPod and MP3 dock? Of course you do. Well, courtesy of Shanghai shufflers Compupal, they can be yours for the princely sum of $90. Its so exclusive, the sales rep wasnt going to allow us to take a pic in case anyone nabbed the idea for the design. Mind you, anyone else think it looks a tad like our old alien pal ET?

METALBANDMOTORINGON

Rapper 50 Cent is dropping in to GITEX today to help launch SMS headphones - but we found a nifty little

set yesterday hoping to Motor ahead of rap's bad boys. Anna Claesson is marketing manager for Motorheadphones, which bear the name of legendary heavy rockers Motorhead. She has her fingers crossed the Ace of Spades rockers become Dubais Queen of Hearts when it comes to the canned war with the In Da Club star.

KISSGOODBYETOTHATMIRROR

Running short of time to throw together a look before that taxi arrives? Or just too lazy to try clothes on in the fitting room? What you need is an electronic wardrobe. You can now try clothes virtually in store - or run through your own attire at home in seconds. Just digitally insert your wardrobe onto the screen and then use hand gestures to plonk the items on your body to see what looks best. Im going to stick my neck out and predict this is going to sell like hot cakes over here. The Brit firm behind it - C in Store - already has the 6ft device in major UK retailers like Tesco and John Lewis.

Its a blend of online and offline, says the man behind the screens, Andrew Richardson. So Palm Princesses and Jumeirah Janes lend me your ears - fitting one to own wardrobe starts at Dhs71,000.

APOLISHED DISPLAY

This is the real deal - no replica. On a day when Dubai Police revealed they're cracking down on counterfeit goods in the likes of Karama, Etisalat and English football side Manchester City FC had the genuine trophy that teams captain Vincent Kompany hoisted high above his head back in May to celebrate the Abu Dhabi backed clubs Premier League triumph.

The reactions been fabulous, said Citys Steven Antrobus. Everyones been getting up close and getting their picture taken. Looking yes, but no touching at all - as myself and a number of others found to our cost. Sorry, white-gloved Graham.

TAPPINGTHELATESTTRENDS

Sebastien Tormos, director of mobile solutions and business development at Data Group is a unique man. He is only one of a few thousand people in the world that has an NFC and e-wallet enabled phone. And he was kind enough to show us how it works. Tap your phone and watch it go, say the experts. Theyre not wrong. Enabled through the American-based Frenchmans bank in Texas, Tormos showed us how hes bought coffee in Singapore and paid for a taxi in Australia with one swipe of his handset.
