Apple appeals court patent ruling favoring Samsung in Tokyo

TOKYO, Oct. 15 -- (Kyodo) _ Apple Inc. on Monday appealed the ruling of the Tokyo District Court, which dismissed the U.S. firm's claim that Samsung Electronics Co. infringed on its smartphone and tablet computer patent.

The creator of iPhones and iPads, which demanded 100 million yen in damages, is now taking the case to the Intellectual Property High Court in Tokyo.

As the first Japanese ruling related to the companies' global legal battle, the district court in August rejected Apple's claim that some of Samsung's Galaxy smartphones and tablets infringe an Apple technology patent related to synchronizing music and other data among portable devices.
