TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Aug. 9 -- The city of Tallahassee issued the following news release:

TLH Recipient of Environmental Excellence Award - The Florida Airports Council (FAC) recently announced that Tallahassee Regional Airport (TLH) has received the Environmental Excellence Award (EEA) for 2012. Announced at the FAC's annual conference last month in Naples, TLH received the award for the installation of Solar Photovoltaic System in the main terminal building. This is the second time in three years Tallahassee Regional Airport has won the prestigious award.

In keeping with the environmental sustainability theme, the award is manufactured using recycled glass. This year's award recognized Tallahassee Regional Airport for a project that provides the capacity to generate up to 25 kilowatts of electricity. It was installed as part of the airport's water intrusion project. The 176 photovoltaic laminate solar panel systems (144 watts each) are affixed atop the northeast side of the terminal. The solar project is expected to generate an annual energy saving of $7,000 based on current energy costs and reduce the carbon footprint by approximately 28 tons annually. When at the airport, visitors can view the solar display, located in the baggage claim area, and watch the system activity monitor solar power being generated in real time.

In 2010, the Airport also received the statewide environmental award from the FAC for the use of Sustainable Construction Practices in the rehabilitation of its North General Aviation Apron. "Winning this award twice demonstrates our airport's commitment to environmental sustainability and stewardship," said Aviation Director, Sunil Harman.

The Tallahassee Regional Airport is operated and maintained by the City of Tallahassee. The Airport is served by four major commercial air carriers including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and US Airways Express.
