DNR Seeks Comments on EAW for Proposed Minntac Mine Extension Project in Mountain Iron

ST. PAUL, Minn., Aug. 6 -- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources issued the following news release:

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking public comments on an environmental assessment worksheet (EAW) for the proposed Minntac Mine Extension Project. U.S. Steel - Minntac is proposing a 483-acre extension of its existing open pit mining facilities in Mountain Iron.

The project will extend mine life and taconite production to 2031. Taconite produced from the extension will continue to be processed at the existing Minntac facility at the current levels of production.

The DNR will accept comments on the EAW until 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 5.

Written comments should be sent to: Lisa Fay, DNR Ecological and Water Resources Division, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, MN 55155-4025.

Email comments may be sent to environmentalrev.dnr@state.mn.us. Email comments should include "Minntac EAW" in the subject line and provide a name and mailing address so that future notices and documents can be provided. Comments may also be faxed to 651-297-1500.

The EAW notice of availability was published in the Aug. 6 EQB Monitor. EAW documents are posted online on the DNR website(http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/input/environmentalreview/minntac/index.html).Copies of the EAW are also available at the following locations:
