The US trade deficit fell to $48.68 billion in May from an upwardly revised $50.6 billion in April. Minutes from the June FOMC meeting revealed that Fed officials expect the US economy to expand more slowly than expected, with the unemployment rate falling “only slowly.” The FOMC continued to discuss the need for further monetary stimulus. The Fed also sees the deterioration in Europe and slowing in China as major risk factors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded down to 12,534.33 on Wednesday staying below its 50-day simple moving average at 12,656. The NASDAQ traded down to 2866.53 below its 50-day at 2885.
Asian stocks were mixed on Wednesday. The Nikkei 225 ended the day at 8,851 – down 0.08%. The Hang Seng ended the day at 19,420 – up 0.12%. European exchanges were also mixed on Wednesday. The FTSE 100 ended the day at 5,664 – up 0.01%. The DAX ended the day at 6,454 – up 0.24%. The CAC 40 ended the day at 3,157 – down 0.57%. The yield on the 10-Year US Treasury note traded down from 1.523% to 1.452% as the “flight to quality” continues.
Gold traded between $1565.5 the Troy ounce and $1583.4 as the 50-day and 200-day simple moving averages decline to $1594.8 and $1660.7. Crude oil rebounded from $84.01 per barrel to $86.49 between its 200-week simple moving average at $80.35 and the 50-day at $88.25. The euro versus the dollar traded down from 1.2295 to a new multi-year low at 1.2217.

BHP Billiton (BHP) - The Anglo-Australian mining company has been downgraded to Neutral from Outperform at Credit Suisse. DuPont (DD) has been downgraded to Neutral from Outperform at Macquarie with a $54 price target on concerns regarding chemical segment performance. Sigma-Aldrich (SIAL) has been downgraded to Neutral from Overweight at JP Morgan. Dow components – Alcoa (AA) down 0.30%, DuPont (DD) down 1.91%.
