Mr. Riley, a member of the Synthetic Biologics Board of Directors since March 2010 and Chairman of the Board from November 2011 to May, 2012, was appointed as the Company’s President and Chief Executive Officer in February 2012. He has more than 20 years of experience in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries during which he negotiated numerous worldwide strategic corporate alliances, established joint ventures, and assisted in obtaining venture financings to support product development. Most recently, in addition to serving as Synthetic Biologics' Chairman, where Mr. Riley played an integral role in the formation of the Company¹s recent collaboration with Intrexon Corporation, he served as Managing Director of 526 Ventures, a life science-focused venture consulting firm with a commercial and traditional focus. Prior to this, he was a venture partner with QIC Bioventures Fund, the life science-focused venture component of the $70 billion Australian-based Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC). Over his career, Mr. Riley held senior positions within the mergers & acquisitions and in country management groups at both SmithKline Beecham and Pfizer. Additionally, he served as CFO and VP Corporate Development for Nichols Institute Diagnostics, later acquired by Corning and spun out to Quest Diagnostics, Inc. (NYSE: DGX). Mr. Riley holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Boise State University, completed coursework at UCSF/Berkeley in drug discovery/development and participated in a dual-degree graduate program (MBA/MIM) sponsored by Arizona State University and the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Mr. Ballantyne joined Synthetic Biologics as its Chief Financial Officer in February 2012. From 2006 until its acquisition in April 2011, Mr. Ballantyne served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Clinical Data, Inc., a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company which was acquired by Forest Laboratories, Inc. for $1.3 billion. While at Clinical Data, he was instrumental in leading corporate financings totaling approximately $220 million as well as a number of acquisition and divestitures totaling $116 million. Mr. Ballantyne has also served as Chief Financial Officer of a number of private medical technology companies, including Avedro and ZymeQuest. Earlier in his career, he served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for ACNielsen Europe Middle East & Africa and held the Chief Financial Officer position as well for two years. There, Mr. Ballantyne was responsible for all aspects of operations, strategic planning and finance in more than 45 countries for a corporation with 9,700 employees. He also helped lead the company's successful ISO certification process. He began his career at the Dun & Bradstreet Corporation where he held several senior financial positions. Mr. Ballantyne earned a BA from the University of Western Ontario, and took a post-graduate degree in Business Administration with Honors from the University of Windsor.

Dr. Reed joined Synthetic Biologics in May 2012 as the Senior Vice President of Clinical & Regulatory Affairs. In this position, Dr. Reed will be responsible for the design and implementation of all aspects of clinical development, including clinical trials, and will lead the Company's regulatory initiatives. Most recently, Dr. Reed served as Chief Medical Officer at Clinical Data, Inc. from 2005 through 2011, after the company merged with Genaissance Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where she had served as Vice President, Medical Affairs since 2003. During her tenure at Clinical Data, Inc., Dr. Reed was responsible for the design and management of two successful consecutive Phase III clinical trials for VIIBRYD® which is used in the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults. These efforts led to the approval of VIIBRYD in January 2011 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Prior to this time, Dr. Reed served as Associate Medical Director in Pulmonary Medical Research at Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Previously, she was the Associate Director, Section of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Hospital of St. Raphael and directed its Medical Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Reed earned an MD from the Rush Medical College in Chicago and an MS in Biology from the University of Illinois.

Dr. Monahan joined Synthetic Biologics in December 2011 as the Senior Vice President of Research & Development. Dr. Monahan is an experienced CEO-level executive of biotech companies focused on gene medicine and pharmaceutical companies with biotechnology research departments. He is currently also a board member of a number of private biotech companies. In 1992, he founded and built Avigen, Inc., a biotech company that pioneered and led the development of gene medicines based on AAV vectors, now an industry standard. Over a 12 year period as CEO of Avigen, Dr. Monahan took the company public through its IPO, raised over $235 million and led the company through a number of gene medicine Investigational New Drug (IND) applications. Prior to founding Avigen, Dr. Monahan served as Vice President - Research and Development at Somatix, another pioneering gene medicine company, Prior to that he was Director of Molecular & Cell Biology at Triton Biosciences (since merged with Berlex Laboratories). Prior to that he was Research Group Chief, Department of Molecular Genetics at Hoffmann-LaRoche, Inc. and Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Cell Biology at New York University. He earned a PhD in Biochemistry from McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada and a BS degree in Science from University College, Dublin, Ireland. Dr. Monahan has over 50 publications/reviews in the scientific literature and has made hundreds of presentations including public TV interviews, to scientific groups, investors and the public in general over the years.

Ms. Caudill joined Synthetic Biologics in June 2010 as the Vice President of Finance and Corporate Controller. She is responsible for leadingSynthetic Biologic’s financial reporting and accounting functions. Ms. Caudill brings to Synthetic Biologics more than 20 years of accounting and Securities and Exchange Commission compliance expertise, including 15 years in the biotechnology sector. In addition, she has experience in the areas of internal and external audit management, budget planning and control, treasury operations and stock option reporting. Prior to joining Synthetic Biologics , she was the Corporate Controller and Corporate Secretary at Aastrom Biosciences, Inc., and held various positions in accounting management and financial reporting at KMS Fusion and PALL Corporation (formerly Gelman Science, Inc.). Ms. Caudill earned a BBA in Accounting from Eastern Michigan University.

Ms. Guzman joined Synthetic Biologics in 2006 as the Executive Assistant to the Chairman and CEO. In October 2009, she was appointed Corporate Secretary and Treasurer, and in November 2009, she was appointed the Vice President of Administration. Ms. Guzman is responsible for the human resource and administrative functions at Synthetic Biologics, and also coordinates the Company's clinical trials. Prior to joining Synthetic Biologics, she worked at HandyLab, Inc. (acquired by Becton, Dickinson and Company in 2009). Ms. Guzman earned a BS in biology and chemistry from Adrian College.

Dr. Kaleko joined Synthetic Biologics in 2012 as the Scientific Director. He brings over 20 years of experience in the biotechnology/ pharmaceutical sector, including eleven years at Genetic Therapy, Inc., a Novartis company, where he developed multiple gene transfer and gene expression platform technologies for hemophilia, cancer, diabetes and ocular diseases. In 2002, he co-founded Advanced Vision Therapies, Inc. to develop treatments for eye diseases, including an anti-inflammatory biological for multiple ocular indications. After selling the company in 2005, he continued as Chief Scientific Officer until 2010. Dr. Kaleko has published 62 peer-reviewed articles, filed over 30 patent applications and received the Novartis Pharma Research and Development Business Excellence Award for his work in the diabetes field. Dr. Kaleko earned ScB, MD and PhD degrees from Brown University, served his medical residency in internal medicine at Vanderbilt University and completed a fellowship in clinical endocrinology with a focus in gene therapy research at the University of Washington, Seattle.

Ms. Maly serves as the Vice President of Corporate Communication after joining Synthetic Biologics in November 2010 as a consultant and then as the Senior Director of Corporate Communication in February 2011. She is responsible for leading Synthetic Biologic's overall corporate communication program including the investor and public relations functions. Prior to joining Synthetic Biologics , Ms. Maly spent 10 years in the biotechnology sector at Aastrom Biosciences, Inc., most recently as the Senior Director Communications & Administration, and 15 years in tax practice within the public accounting field at C.H. Rubin & Company CPAs, and earlier in her career with S.L. Boswell CPAs. Ms. Maly earned a BA in English Language & Literature and History of Art from the University of Michigan, and completed 98 hours of postgraduate business and accounting coursework.
