Biography:
Mr. Riley, a member of the Synthetic Biologics Board of Directors since March 2010 and Chairman of the Board from November 2011 to May, 2012, was appointed as the Company’s President and Chief Executive Officer in February 2012. He has more than 20 years of experience in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries during which he negotiated numerous worldwide strategic corporate alliances, established joint ventures, and assisted in obtaining venture financings to support product development. Most recently, in addition to serving as Synthetic Biologics' Chairman, where Mr. Riley played an integral role in the formation of the Company¹s recent collaboration with Intrexon Corporation, he served as Managing Director of 526 Ventures, a life science-focused venture consulting firm with a commercial and traditional focus. Prior to this, he was a venture partner with QIC Bioventures Fund, the life science-focused venture component of the $70 billion Australian-based Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC). Over his career, Mr. Riley held senior positions within the mergers & acquisitions and in country management groups at both SmithKline Beecham and Pfizer. Additionally, he served as CFO and VP Corporate Development for Nichols Institute Diagnostics, later acquired by Corning and spun out to Quest Diagnostics, Inc. (NYSE: DGX). Biography:
Mr. Ballantyne joined Synthetic Biologics as its Chief Financial Officer in February 2012. From 2006 until its acquisition in April 2011, Mr. Ballantyne served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Clinical Data, Inc., a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company which was acquired by Forest Laboratories, Inc. for $1.3 billion. While at Clinical Data, he was instrumental in leading corporate financings totaling approximately $220 million as well as a number of acquisition and divestitures totaling $116 million. Mr. Ballantyne has also served as Chief Financial Officer of a number of private medical technology companies, including Avedro and ZymeQuest. Earlier in his career, he served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for ACNielsen Europe Middle East & Africa and held the Chief Financial Officer position as well for two years. There, Mr. Ballantyne was responsible for all aspects of operations, strategic planning and finance in more than 45 countries for a corporation with 9,700 employees. Dr. Reed joined Synthetic Biologics in May 2012 as the Senior Vice President of Clinical & Regulatory Affairs. In this position, Dr. Reed will be responsible for the design and implementation of all aspects of clinical development, including clinical trials, and will lead the Company's regulatory initiatives. Most recently, Dr. Reed served as Chief Medical Officer at Clinical Data, Inc. from 2005 through 2011, after the company merged with Genaissance Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where she had served as Vice President, Medical Affairs since 2003. During her tenure at Clinical Data, Inc., Dr. Reed was responsible for the design and management of two successful consecutive Phase III clinical trials for VIIBRYD® which is used in the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults. These efforts led to the approval of VIIBRYD in January 2011 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Prior to this time, Dr. Reed served as Associate Medical Director in Pulmonary Medical Research at Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Previously, she was the Associate Director, Section of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Hospital of St. Raphael and directed its Medical Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Monahan joined Synthetic Biologics in December 2011 as the Senior Vice President of Research & Development. Dr. Monahan is an experienced CEO-level executive of biotech companies focused on gene medicine and pharmaceutical companies with biotechnology research departments. In 1992, he founded and built Avigen, Inc., a biotech company that pioneered and led the development of gene medicines based on AAV vectors, now an industry standard. Dr. Kaleko joined Synthetic Biologics in 2012 as the Scientific Director. He brings over 20 years of experience in the biotechnology/ pharmaceutical sector, including eleven years at Genetic Therapy, Inc., a Novartis company, where he developed multiple gene transfer and gene expression platform technologies for hemophilia, cancer, diabetes and ocular diseases.
